Best Laid Plans Often Go Awry ....

Hello all! This is Mom. We all went back to Houston this weekend to let me train the new person for my old job. We also wanted to wish my parents, the dachsies' Grandma and Grandpaw, happy 57th anniversary! It was today and we were glad we could be there with them.

We headed home about 6:00 and got here about 7:30. As I was driving, I was thinking I should feed the dachsies when we get home. I'd unload the car first. Then feed them. Then get online, post some pictures and make an entry so you all know that Roxie is home and doing well and, except for three (yes, she got bit twice) fang marks on her pretty muzzle, she is back to her old self. Then I would read Mona's blog and call her mom.

It was a wonderful plan.

It didn't happen that way.

As I said, we got home about 7:30. I know the dachsies were tired of being cooped up in their crates after 90 minutes of driving, so I put them in the yard to run around while I unloaded the car. I had made one (just ONE) trip when I heard the dreaded "we have found something" bark. I threw the next batch of things to carry into the car and, since the dogs were on the other side of the house, I stopped long enough to get the shotgun and shells before I went around back and found them all facing the same direction in the same area where Roxie got her copperhead bites last Wednesday. I yelled for them to get away and they did. As they passed me, I saw that Andy had a bloody spot on his nose. I would like to tell you that I thought "Oh no, not again?" but my reaction was a little stronger and probably not something my mother would be proud to hear me say ... Anyway, yes, the copperhead was back, Andy was bit and I was armed this time. I blew that sucker away. He won't be biting any person or dog ever again. One shot; one dead or dieing snake. Just call me "Dead-eye". I have not a shred of remorse. I called my dad and asked about the best way to transport an almost dead copperhead (carefully and locked up) to the vet. I called Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital (more on this later) and took Andy in. You know all that money I've made helping my old company? Guess who has it now!

You know you have been to the ER too many times when you identify yourself and can say the dog that wasn't bitten before got bitten tonight and the person who answers the phone says "Oh, no, Andy got bit?" They had the paperwork ready for me to sign when I got there. Poor Andy, he wasn't feeling good at all but he is in good hands. Sammy did this in May and Roxie did this on Wednesday. They both got through it and Sammy's scars have even healed up. The whole crew recognizes me now. Soon I should qualify for volume discounts.

Oh, and yes, it was a copperhead and it was dead. I had transported it in a locked cooler and, when they brought the cooler back to me, they said the folks in the back were admiring my efficiency. I guess they won't come to visit unexpectedly.

I will try to post some pictures that I took of Roxie when she got home and was still swollen. I'll take some pictures of Andy too. I don't feel like posting pictures tonight. I hope you'll forgive me.

Oops, we did it again ....

Hello all! Andy here. I just put Mom to bed. She has had an eventful day.

But first, I want to thank everydog, cat and person for remembering my adoption day. You know how to make a day really special. And thank you for remembering Sammy's adoption day. Mom feels bad about not making a special entry for him. It's been four years since he was adopted and he thought Mom should have made a little more effort to tell everydog. Oh well, at least our friends remembered! Mom says she does have an excuse ... she was working for her old company. They contracted her to come in and take care of things that haven't been looked at since she left four months ago. Now she can buy us some really nice dog biscuits. She said she bought us tires for the dachsie-mobile.

Hey that reminds us, we saw the Oscar Mayer wiener mobile. It would have been a little more exciting if it hadn't been on the flat bed of a tow truck. But, hey, how many of you can say you have actually seen the wiener mobile? Thought so!

Oh yeah, we were discussing how to spend the extra money that Mom made ... well, tonight Roxie probably arranged for Mom to spend the rest of it. We found another copperhead snake. Yes, we got too close. And yes, it bit Roxie in the muzzle. And yes, Roxie didn't feel good so Mom packed all of us up and took us to the same Texas A&M Small Animal Emergency Room that Sammy and Roxie went to last time. Roxie has to spend the night. Sammy, who got bit in the lip, didn't even act like it bothered him but they gave Mom some antibiotics for him. I, of course, was smart enough to stay back and bark. That's twice they have been bitten and there ain't no bites on me! (I wanted to add a picture of a copperhead snake here but I decided Mom had seen enough snakes for this week.)

Anyway, like I said, Mom is tired after an eventful day. She got home and was here about an hour before she bundled all of us off to the ER. Last time, Mom and Grandpaw took Sammy and then Grandma called and said Roxie was swelling up. Mom didn't have anyone at home to watch us so we all had to go with her. We want to say that ALL vets offices smell the same and it is not a good smell!

Don't worry about Roxie. They said she is doing fine and one of the vet students already thinks she is pretty and sweet. Mom will probably bring her back home tomorrow.

Boy! We really like living in the country! There are so many things to bark at and to do. Getting bitten by a snake is kind of low on the "things to do" list but sometimes a dog has to do what a dog has to do.

I'm dog tired too. I think I'll call it a night and make sure Mom is sleeping soundly. Hopefully, Mom will let you know what is going on. She has been really lax about keeping up with our blog or reading anyone else's blog. To all of our friends, we still love you. We will get back into regular blogging soon ... we hope.

Happy Adoption Day to Andy!

Hello everydog! This is Andy and it is the anniversary of my adoption day! Mom adopted me three years ago. I was a foster for a month or two before she adopted me but that is okay. Even before she decided to adopt me, I was part of the family. I didn't even realize I was a foster dog until she told me I was officially adopted.

I have had a great day. Aunt Bec, Maggie and Jake were here this weekend. Jake and I love to run around and bark at things. We even saw an armadillo. Mom was to slow to take a picture but we saw it and smelled and barked at it.

I got this cool picture from Rocky, Bear and Angel Lacylulu! I had Mom save it to our computer so I could enjoy it all of the time. Thank you, my friends, for making me this wonderful picture!

As much as I hate for my day to come to an end, it is time for us to go to bed. Thank you to everydog, cat, hamsterrier and person who wished me a happy adoption day. I'd have to say that it was the best day of my life!!!

Hunting and Healing

It has been absolutely beautiful the last few days. It has been a little windy but other than that the sun has been shining and we have been sniffing around. We were in the back yard and checked out some of the logs laying around.

Mom was brave and didn't chase us away from the logs. She thought about it but figured if a snake was there, he would have a chance to get away from us.

We moved on to another part of the yard.

But Andy got a little side-tracked. We weren't sure what he found to sniff but ...

before you knew it, he was roaching! Doesn't that look like a fun thing to do on a sun-shiny day?

Sammy thought it looked so good he joined in!

And he roached some more!

Roxie didn't roach because she is so delicate. Maybe one of these days Mom can catch Roxie enjoying a good roll in the grass!

Hey, do you remember how Sammy looked right after the snake bit him? You can really see the bite next to his right eye.

Well, this is how he looks now! He still needs to heal a little bit more but he sure looks a lot better!

It's a lot easier to heal when you have friends sending prayers and good thoughts and "Sibe Vibes"! As you can tell, we are back to enjoying the good life!

Andy's Visit to the Vet

Today was Andy's day to go to the veterinarian. He just needed a vaccination and a routine test. Mom was so happy because she got out of there for under $100! Andy is all healthy except for a couple of little bumps on the top of his head by his left ear. The vet said they were little warts and for Mom to keep an eye on them. Mom will probably get them removed if Andy ever needs to take a nap while he gets his teeth cleaned.

Mom found out Roxie shouldn't eat anything but her canned dog food. If Mom wants to give Roxie a treat, it has to be a little bit of the canned food. So far Roxie has been eating all of her food but sometimes she is a picky eater. If she gets picky about eating that food ... well, Mom says we won't worry about that unless it happens. The special food is Hill's S/D. It looks kind of nasty to Mom but, if it will make Roxie's stones go away, she will buy it and scoop it into Roxie's bowl twice a day. Somedog asked if Roxie drinks a lot of water to help keep her bladder flushed. She drinks a normal amount of water but this food has a little bit of salt in it to encourage her to drink more water. Mom is also making sure Roxie has plenty of opportunity to go outside and do her business.

We are sorry we have been so boring talking about Roxie and her stones so much. We are a little bit worried about our sister. We love her and want her to be happy and healthy. We need that extra barking power when we are in the country!

We got another award! Shania and Macon, whose Mom writes the blog DachshundStrong, gave it to us because we make their mom smile! We think that is a very nice thing to tell someone. You know that you have touched someones life if you have made them smile.

So many of you make us smile and we would like to let all of you know that but we can only pass this award to a few of you.

Copper makes us smile when he posts funny pictures of Hershey! He also made Mom smile because he helped figure out what was wrong with Roxie.

Lorenza! How can you not smile at Lorenza and her antics? She has to be one of the most loved dachsies in Bloggerland!

And last, but certainly not least, is Pippa! He has so many problems keeping Mistress Misery in line. She is posting pictures of flowers on his blog now! We think he really misses her when she is out of town but his stories are so clever, we can't help but smile!

Thank you for all of the smiles you have sent our way. Keep up the good work!

Middle Name Game: Andy - Part 2

Hello everydog. This is Andy again. Mom said I might have been a little egotistical in my last post so she is making me re-do "Bug"

B - Big ears and feet; BIG BARK!

U - Ultra-cute (I know, it's the same one I used before, but it's true!)

G - Great big GRIN! You guys have seen my smile! It's a great smile. And I bet it makes you smile too!

I hope Mom is happy now. She doesn't want you to think I am all conceited or anything. It just that I'm always last so I wanted to really talk up myself! Which one makes you think of me?

Middle Name Game: Andy

And finally I get to play the game. This is Andy. One of these days I hope I get to play the game first. By the time I play, no one is interested anymore.

So anyway, like Roxie and Sammy, I will first tell you the rules.

1. Post the rules before you give the facts.

2. List one fact that is somehow relevant to you and your life for each letter of your middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had.

3. When you are tagged you need to write your post using your middle name and facts about it.

4. At the end of your post choose one dog to tag for each letter of your middle name. Be sure to let each puppy know she/he has been tagged.

Sammy told you how Mom calls me Andy Roo. She also calls me Andy Rooney and Roo Bug. I think I will use Rooney.

R - Really, really, really cute!

O - Outstanding!

O - Obedient! (You are believing this, aren't you?)

N - Nimble! or maybe Noble!

E - Excellent!

Y - You won't find a cuter me anywhere else!

Hey, that was pretty fun! Maybe I'll do Bug too.

B - Beautiful!

U - Ultra-cute!

G - Glorious!

What do you think? Do you agree that these sound like descriptions of me?

Being a Foster Dog and Getting Adopted

Hello, everydog, cat and GirlGirl,

Andy here again.

As I mentioned, today is the anniversary of my adoption. But I had lived some of my life before my adoption day. Someone was supposed to be taking care of me but wasn't giving me my heartworm protection medicine. Heartworms are nasty, horrible things that can kill us if we don't get our medicine each month. Well, I got heartworms and Mom thinks that is why someone got rid of me. Dachshund Rescue of Houston thought I deserved a better chance at life so they took me in. I lived in a kennel at the veterinarian's office for a while because there wasn't a home for me to live in. I didn't even have a name so they called me Dachsie #2. Then Aunt Bec adopted Maggie (who was one of Mom's fosters) and Mom said she would take another foster. She asked for Dachsie #1 but he already had a home so DRoH asked if she would take me. I can't believe how close I came to never meeting Mom! Anyway, she took me home and named me and took me to the vet so he could give me the shots to get rid of my heartworms.

This is one of the first pictures Mom has of me. Aunt Bec took it when we were all at the country house. I had been living with Mom about a month. Aunt Bec sent the picture to DRoH so they would have a cute picture that would make someone want to adopt me.

It's a pretty cute picture, isn't it? Of course all of this talk about someone else adopting me had me pretty worried.

Mom started talking about adopting me but she was concerned about having three dogs. So I worried some more ...

I started showing Mom what a good guard dog I am.

So she finally adopted me and I could get a good night's sleep.

The best part about being adopted is I know I get to see Mom and Roxie and Sammy everyday. I know I'll get fed. I have lots of toys to play with. I get to be petted and loved on.

In fact, Mom let me celebrate my adoption anniversary by sleeping with her last night. She says it's not really sleeping for her because some little dog lays in the middle of the bed and somehow succeeds in leaving her one little spot to sleep in. I didn't see any other dogs in the bed so I'm not sure who she meant. This morning, Mom gave me some extra cottage cheese with my breakfast. I love my cottage cheese. I always eat it first. One time when Mom forgot to get more, I looked at my bowl and looked at her. She doesn't run out of cottage cheese anymore.

We didn't really celebrate today because Mom had to work. When she got home it was raining, raining, raining so we had dinner and sat down to watch some television. But I wanted to make a blog entry to let you know all about my adoption. I know some of you have heard this all before, but I want the rest of my friends to know too. I hope your humans remember that rescued doggies are good pets too!

I have to go now. I need to find out if that other dog is taking up the best part of Mom's bed. Maybe I can get him to go into my crate and I can sleep with her again!

The More the Merrier!

Hello All! We have a houseful this weekend. Aunt Bec went to see a friend who lives in Ohio and Mom is taking care of us and Maggie and Jake. It's almost as good as being at the country house but we miss Aunt Bec. Maggie really misses her mom as you can see here.

You can see Andy laying down behind her. We slept a lot today because it was raining and Mom wouldn't let us run in and out all day long. Sammy found a comfortable place to sleep.

Roxie found a comfy place too but she wanted Mom to leave her alone and put the camera away!

Jake just takes up position near the door hoping Mom will open it back up. Jake LOVES to be outside as much as possible!

But when it's mealtime, we all wake up.

Since it takes a little while to make five meals, the girls are smart enough to find the comfortable places to sit. Mom says it a little like an obstacle course in the kitchen!

But we did finally get our dinner!

And finally, Roxie wants you to see what a poor little girl she is ... doesn't this just pull at your heartstrings?

Patrolling the Yard and Find the Cowdog

Okay! now it's time to tell you some more about our trip!

Here is a picture of Roxie and our cousin Jake checking out the fence line.
You have to look for Jake but he is really there!

Andy was keeping an eye out for things happening on the other side of the fence!

Sammy was doing his part too! And Grandpa will be happy to see he wasn't in the flowerbeds!

And guess what we saw on the other side of the fence! There were cowdogs down by Grandpa's pond! See the black one on the right, she is in the next picture. Can you find her?

She's looking right at you!

We also got to see some pretty flowers. This is a morning glory.

The cowdogs have been multiplying! We will show you pictures of the the baby cowdogs next time!

Andy's Toy

We have gotten a couple of questions about the toy Andy is playing with in his "tummy tag" picture. We have been wanting to make a post about that toy so now is as good of a time as any! Maybe you remember in a previous post, Mom had called a toy a donkey but when she found the packaging, she realized it was a fox. Even then we told you Mom is pretty silly because a donkey does not look anything like a fox. Mom says her excuse was it was brown and had long legs. You tell us ...

Anyway, that lead to Mom always calling the toy Fox-that-is-not-a-donkey. She decided that was too much to say so she thought about F(ox-that-is-not-a-d)onkey and decided to call it Fonkey. (Control yourselves out there. She IS our Mom.)

Well, Andy loved to play with that toy but Sammy decided that Fonkey was his replacement for poor Red Bear who is still around but is only a shell of his former self. Since Sammy doesn't play with lots of toys, Mom usually lets him have one if he picks it out.

To make it up to Andy, Mom went to get another toy. She wanted to buy a Stinky but Petsmart only had the fox. (Here are the different ones in the series. This is just a site Mom found that shows all of the toys. It is not an endorsement for the site.) This is Foxy. He is the plush fox. You can tell because he has black legs.

So now we have Fonkey and Foxy and, guess what, Sammy wants them both. Mom spends most the time taking one away from Sammy and letting Andy have it. Roxie just ignores the whole process.

And, yes, Fonkey's face is a little chewed up. We have been working on him. He is already missing his squeakers.

Bad Doggie!

Hello everydog, cat and Fufu,

Andy here.

Boy was I in trouble last night. It was raining and thundering most of the evening. It started coming down really hard near Mom's office about 15 minutes before she usually leaves to come home. Since she could see all the cars just stopped because some of the roads had deep water on them, she decided to stay at the office a little longer. She finally got home about an hour and half later than normal.

Anyway, we went outside and did our business. We came back in and had dinner. We laid on the sofa with Mom while she watched a little television and then we went outside before it was time to go to bed.

Mom leaves us out for a while when it is wet outside because she knows we will eventual do what we need to do. So after about 5 minutes or so, she opens the back door. In runs Sammy. She looks outside but she doesn't see Roxie or me so she closes the door and puts Sammy in his crate. She comes back to the back door and opens it so Roxie can come running inside. Roxie goes into her crate. Mom comes back to the back door and starts whistling and calling for me but I don't come.

And I don't come.

And I don't come.

Mom is starting to get a little worried that maybe I got hurt and can't come when she calls so she gets her flashlight (torch for some of you folks) and goes out into the soggy, "water standing everywhere because it hasn't drained off yet" back yard. Fortunately it wasn't raining anymore! She is in sandals so her feet are getting all wet. She goes over to the magnolia trees and shines the light through the limbs but it is so dark she can't really see anything. She wades back behind the garage where the water is standing one or two inches deep, shining the flashlight all over the place. She looks under the magnolia trees again. Mom is really getting worried now. She decides she needs a better flashlight so she can see under the tree and heads for the house. About that time she hears some tags jingling behind her from under the tree and I decided to poke my head out. If she hadn't been so worried that I was hurt or something, I would have been in real trouble. Instead she was just glad to see me and I was okay and now we could all go to bed ... after she dried off her feet.

The moral of this story is: If you aren't going to be good and come when they call, wait until they are over being mad and are worried before you do finally show up. But be careful. Sometimes she closes the door and doesn't come back for a long, long time. By then you are really ready to come back in!

Bluebonnets ... The State Flower of Texas

It is the end of bluebonnet season here. The bluebonnets bloom in early and mid-April but there were still a few blooms in the corner of the yard.

The boys weren't afraid to show that they have a softer side and can stop to smell the bluebonnets.

The New Toy

Hi, dogfriends! Andy here.

The other day Mom bought this toy for our cousin Jake. He is really tough on toys and is an expert at ripping them up and pulling the stuffing out in a couple of minutes. He had one of these chickens before and it took him a couple of weeks to completely destroy it. When Mom saw this one in the store, she decided to buy it for him even though it was a little expensive for a dog toy.

Jake and Maggie and Aunt Bec came over the other night, so Mom gave Jake the toy. He was having a lot of fun playing with it but then he decided to go outside. Jake likes to be outside more than any of us. He will spend hours out there.

Anyway, when Jake left the toy, I decided to go check it out but I had to keep an eye out for Jake.

I decided I like the toy so much, I would protect it. Oh, okay, I decided it made a comfy pillow so I laid my head on it.

Jake did not take the toy home with him ... but he still gets to play with it when he comes over.

(Note from Mom: If Jake wants to take the toy home, he may. I bought it for Jake. If Andy really wants a toy like this, I will shell out another $12 to get him one.)

Saturday Morning

Good morning, everydog! What a beautiful day we have today. We were anxious to get outside. Mom took her sweet time about opening the door for us. Here we are staring at her to get her to open the door. We have already run over to it a couple of times. Andy is still by the door so you can't even see him.

Once we got outside, Andy wanted to see if Mom had any treats to give us. She didn't.

Sammy started hunting around. See how good he looks. Mom says you can really tell that he is in good shape in this picture. We think he is probably looking for something to eat!

Roxie just went outside for a little bit. She wanted to get back into the house and claim her spot on the sofa. This is her Queen Roxie look.

We have to go now. Mom said she was going into work for a little bit today. She wants to get back so she can spend more time with us. We are her world ... as it should be.
