Roxie's Great Escape

Hello everydog! We hope you have had a nice April. It has been raining around here. Mom seems to think it is a good thing except when we come inside with muddy paws. Then again, maybe she likes those, she usually tells us "thank you for getting mud on my clean jeans"!

Anyway, we have had some excitement around here. Grandpa and Grandma drove up so they could look at the bluebonnets.

Grandma was busy while Mom and Grandpa were working on the lawnmower and left the gate open when (no, not Roxie, you have to wait for that story) somedog escaped.

Yes, it was Jake. Mom turned around and looked at the yard and asked "Where's Jake?" No one saw him sneak out so they thought he might still be in the yard. Mom was looking along the fence and there was Jake outside of it. Mom went over to him and was talking to him. He ran up to the fence to get closer to her and she turned and started walking toward the opened gate. Jake was a good boy and followed her even though he was outside. He really wanted to get to her because she was talking so nice. Finally, he ran around the fence, through the gate and right up to Mom. Mom told him he was such a good boy for coming when she called. Mom was glad he was back but she was even happier that she didn't have to tell Aunt Bec that she lost one of the furkids!

Well, a few days later, Roxie and Andy are going crazy on the deck by the back door. Mom called them and they ignored her. (See what a good boy Jake is?) It was dusk so Mom went to get the flashlight and there, under the deck looking up at her, was a possum. Uh oh. If the dogs figure out how to get under there Mom will never get them out. Dachsies can be very obedient dogs when they want to be but they NEVER want to be when their prey drive is activated. Mom grabbed Andy and took him into the house. She went back and after some maneuvering, she was able to get Roxie too.

Well, a couple of nights later, Roxie is in the backyard. Mom figures it is the same stupid (did not move when it had the chance) possum. Sure enough it was the possum but, oh no, Roxie is under the deck this time. Mom went to get a pitcher full of water and poured it all over Roxie through the gaps in the deck. It didn't work. Mom called, waved one of Roxie's favorite treats and finally decided nothing she could do was going to work so she told Roxie good-bye and Mom came back into the house wondering how much this emergency veterinary bill was going to run. Shortly an unharmed Roxie came to the door to come inside.

Well, a few days later, Mom lets everydog outside while she is doing something in the house. When she is finished she opens the door to let the dogs in and there is Roxie on the other side of the fence and missing her collar. Mom goes over to let her in and Roxie is covered in blood. We don't want our friends to worry too much here so we just want to say that ear wounds bleed A LOT.

It just looks like a little cut on the outside of her ear now but it really, really scared Mom.

Mom wants us to say that dogs can get out of spots that seem too small for anything to get through.

You really need to click on this picture and look at the "hole" at the bottom of the fence.

Mom only figured out this was the spot because she found Roxie's collar a couple of feet away from it.

WELL, a few days later, Roxie was barking in the backyard again. And yes, it was still that stupid possum. Roxie was under the deck, then she ran under the spa. (The spa has a wooden apron that has some holes in it. Roxie ran into one of those while Mom was blocking off the others.) Mom eventually was able to catch Roxie when she came out but now she has a scratched spot inside one of her rear legs. Mom thinks she (Mom) did it to her (Roxie) when she (Mom) pulled her (Roxie) out of the hole.

Once again, other than that, not much has happened around here. Mom is recovering from the previous dog fight. She went to get her tetanus shot and some antibiotics.

Oh, and on a lighter note, Mom and Aunt Bec bought a gardenia bush to put in a planter that Mom has had for years. One of the buds bloomed.

We clicked on the picture of Roxie's ear to biggify it and it sure is a nasty cut! You've got to start staying in your yard, Roxie! Never mind the stoopid possum!
Our hooman sissy gave mom a gardenia plant for Easter and it's been blooming away! Isn't the fragrance wonderful?!

Oooh, ear tip wounds are not nice and bleed ALOT! You guys sure know how to keep your Mom on her toes don't you?
The Gardenia is beautiful, we would probably eat it...and it's roots....and the compost...and then maybe the pot!

Oh Misery loves gardenias. She had a couple but they were in pots and didn't last too long.

Hmm, I hope you haven't inspired her to buy another.....

Now Roxie, you are a capricious pup - although very spunky and adventurous, which is most attractive. I had a poorly ear like that btw when I first found Misery and Master. My ear kept falling down because it had such a big scab.

Anyway you mustn't frighten your mom like that and I don't like to hear worrying stories about you either. So I think that is enough adventuring for a while.

That gardenia is very pretty. Roxie, what an adenture you are having. Maybe you should just catch that possom so it stops bugging you!

Your Mom must have a really strong heart. If my Mom saw one of us covered in blood her heart would stop beating and she would probably pass out.
Stay safe!

Sorry to hear about the ear injury, sounds painful :-) And they do tend to seep a lot of blood. Well good on mom for finding out what happened and saving the day.
