My Great Adventure

Hey Dogs! Sammy here!

Boy did I have a great adventure tonight. About 9:45, Mom let us out into the backyard so we could get ready for bedtime. She was watching the end of a television show and figured that 15 minutes would be enough time for us. She left the back door open in case we finished up and wanted to come back into the house.

Well ... Andy came back and Mom put him in his crate. She came back to back door and looked for Roxie and me. She walked all around the backyard. And she walked all around the backyard again. She couldn't find either one of us. She got a flashlight and checked for holes around the base of the fence but she didn't see anything.

We were gone.

Mom got Andy back out of his crate and put a leash on him and took him for a walk hoping we would come up to him or he would sniff us out. About this time, Mom was so worried. She called Aunt Bec and told her what was happening. By this time it was after 10:30 but Aunt Bec got dressed and drove over just as Mom was bringing Andy back to the house.

That's when they heard Roxie. She was in the backyard again. Aunt Bec took the flashlight and found the hole in the fence that we used to escape. Mom blocked off the hole and she and Aunt Bec each got into their cars and drove around and around and around. They tell me they checked around all of the dumpsters in the area because they thought the smell might attract me.

After about 30 minutes of that, they still didn't find me.

They got back to my house about the same time and decided to walk the next block over again. First Mom unblocked the hole in the fence in case I decided to come back. Then they took off walking again. By this time it is after 11:00. After walking around for 15 minutes, Mom realized she was going to have to depend on the kindness of a stranger to get her sweet Sammy back. They walked home with Aunt Bec trying to keep Mom's spirits up.

They were walking up the driveway to the back door and guess what? I was in the backyard again. I had come back through the hole in the fence. Mom grabbed me up and just about started to cry she was so happy to see me. She just hugged me and hugged me. Then she went to block the hole in the fence so I guess that escape route is blown.

I don't plan to tell Mom what I did while I was out because a guy has to have some secrets from his Mom! But, honestly, I was glad to be home.

There's no place like home.

Sammy and Roxie

I'm sure it was a fine adventure, and sometimes I would often like to sneak out on my own and - well - do my own thing like you did.

But poor mom. She was obviously worried and so pleased to see you. You were cute to go back the same way though. Very clever Dachsies.

I sure am glad you came home and I know your Mom is. That was VERY smart of you to come home but I sure am jealous of what you got to do when you were free!

I'm glad you didn't get lost while you were out adventuring! But you sure owe your Mom a bunch of hugs and kisses now! Before I was born Mom had a dog named Nick - he was a Samoyed - and he talked his mom into running away with him. They were gone for 5 days and got in a lot of trouble. They got caught by some people when they killed their chickens. But, hey, a dogs gotta eat, eh? So, if you run away again just remember that chickens make good suppers!

Hey Flash here. Don't do that again. I can tell you if you happen to get lost it can be scary. I was lost for 8 whole days one time because I decided to get out of the fence. Not good dude.
