What's in a Name?

Copper wanted everyone to tell how they got their names. Everyone has such interesting stories, we are almost ashamed to admit the truth. Anyway, here goes nothing...

Mom wanted two dachshunds -- a boy named Bruno and a girl named Roxie. She just thought Bruno and Roxie sounded like an interesting couple. Not very German sounding but there are probably lots of people out there who don't even know that dachshunds came from Germany. But, back to how we got our names. Mom's once-upon-a-time boyfriend decided to give Mom a dachsie puppy for her birthday. They found a breeder with two girl puppies. Mom picked the one with the black nose and the brown eyes (instead of the pink nose and the golden eyes) and named her Roxie. All was going along as planned.

Mom decided to get her boy dachsie. Aunt Bec knew about Dachshund Rescue and showed Mom a picture of Sammy. Mom adopted Sammy and decided he had experienced too much change in his life to rename him, so now she had Roxie and Sammy. Not quite Bruno but sometimes you have to accept what is.

Then Mom was fostering Dachsie #2. He didn't have a name and the rescue people said to give him a name and let them know. Mom, having notice human nature was to read an alphabetical list starting with the "A"s, decide to give this dog a name that started with an A so people would see him first and he would get a forever home quickly. So she thought about names that started with an A and decided on Andy. Mom ended up adopting him anyway so it didn't matter if his name was Andy or Zach. But that's how Andy got his name.

We don't have exciting "from science fiction" or "it means princess in a foreign language" stories. We just have names. Of course, after she named us, she read somewhere that you shouldn't give people names to dogs because the hairless puppies (children) can develop a complex when they encounter an animal with their name. Since Mom doesn't have any of those kinds of puppies and she thinks it's "hogwash" anyway, she is glad we aren't named Spot or Rover.

Who decides what is a human name and what is a dog name? Of course there are some human names that no self respecting dog would want like...Charles Manson! The humans can keep that name, thank you. Or Britney Spears- ewww...she belches loud and acts goofy. No dog would want to share a name with her. And she has obviously not been spayed because she keeps making human pups. But I digress, back to the subject of names....I think we can be named anything we want. Those little human pups can just get over themselves, dontcha' know?

Yikes - I'd die of embarrasment if I was named something like Snowball. Hey - want to do something fun? Go to Petfinder.com and click on the advanced search. Put your name in and see what other animals have your name! I'm easily amused, what can I say!

Double yikes - I was signed in as Mom instead of me. I guess Mom would be really weird if her name was Snowball, heh heh. She got the easily amused part right though.

I never thought about what you mentioned ... about kids getting a complex if they meet an animal with their name. But, I'm with Isabella, who decides what's a human name and what's a dog name. I like your names and I wish you lived closer so I could play with you.

Esssh! I hope there are no dogs with the name of Charles Manson! Think of the complex that dog would have. Aw, I like the name Snowball. One of my eskie friends is named Snowball. I guess I won't introduce you to her, Zach. She is a cutie.
